Twas the night before season, when all through the country
Every DIII coach was stirring, hoping they would get “lucky”.
The gym floors were cleaned by the janitors with care,
In hopes that any injury would be more than rare.
The athletes were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of buckets danced in their heads.
And the refs in their stripes, and I with my whistle,
Went to bed feeling positively wishful.
When from my alarm there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the gym I flew like a flash,
Tore open the doors and prayed for a cache.
The sun still low in the dark gray sky,
A new season it seemed to signify.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a group of new freshmen ready for their premiere.
With an energetic team, so lively and quick,
Choose any five, take your pick.
More rapid than eagles, the players they came,
As the coaches whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
“Play faster! Play harder! Now, rebound and sprint!
Work harder on defense or you’ll play a short stint.
From the very first practice til the very last play,
Pay no attention to the games of yesterday!”
